According to the International DOI Foundation, a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) "provides a means of persistently identifying a piece of intellectual property on a digital network and associating it with related current data in a structured extensible way". What this means is that a DOI differs from a conventional URL in that it identifies an object, such as an article, rather than just a location. The idea is that DOIs will be clickable, like URLs, taking the user to the object through a transparent resolver system. This will avoid the problem of broken or out of date links that can occur with URLs. In practice, until browsers implement the correct handling of DOIs, they are best used with a separate resolver, at http://www.doi.org.

Many journals are now publishing DOIs for their articles, so where possible the CCS publications list will include the DOI as a link to the DOI resolver. Clicking on this link should take you to the publication, whereever it is. As time allows, older publications will have DOI information added too.
